Few states equal Virginia's importance in the history of the United States. Eight U.S. presidents were born in there; more Civil War battles were fought in Virginia than in any other state. The first English settlement in the New World was Jamestown and it also became the first capital of Virginia. At St. John's Church in Richmond, Virgina, Patrick Henry made his famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" speech. Virginia was also the site of two surrenders; the British surrender ending the American Revolutionary War at Yorktown and the end of the American Civil War at Appomattox.
